Survivor's Guilt

Down
Undeserving //Burdened //Spared

We feel survivor's guilt when we got out, while others didn't. Knowing we did nothing wrong is of no comfort.

Survivor's Guilt
Undeserving //Burdened //Spared
Survivor's guilt is empathy that doesn't know it's done its job. It registers others' pain and refuses to let you move on. That's not a flaw, it's a connection that hasn't found a way to close. It often pushes us to honor those affected.
Good Ideas
  • Name what you survived or escaped
  • Remind yourself — luck is not a crime
  • Honor them with a concrete act
  • Grieve without punishing yourself
  • Channel into something meaningful
  • Separate their pain from your worth
  • Talk to a therapist
Bad Ideas
  • Use guilt as a form of atonement
  • Let it stop you from thriving
  • Punish yourself for surviving
  • Pretend the disparity isn't real
  • Avoid them because you feel guilty
  • Mistake guilt as proof that you're bad
  • Downplay or deny your own struggles
